Exterior Renovations in Calgary: Masonry, Stucco, Parging and Stone

An exterior renovation replaces or restores the visible envelope of a property: the stone, brick, stucco, parging and chimney masonry that protect the structure from Calgary's weather. Martini Stone Masonry Ltd plans and completes these projects as one coordinated scope instead of a series of disconnected trades.

Owner Astrit Martinaj has completed exterior masonry projects across Calgary, Cochrane, Airdrie, Okotoks, Canmore and Banff for more than 20 years, from single-surface repairs to full exterior transformations on new builds and established homes.

WHY RENOVATE THE EXTERIOR

Calgary Exteriors Fail From the Weather, Not From Age Alone

Calgary's climate attacks exterior finishes from three directions. Freeze-thaw cycles force absorbed water to expand inside brick, stucco and parging, up to dozens of cycles per season. Summer hailstorms strike between June and August; the 2020 Calgary hailstorm alone caused $1.2 billion in insured damage, much of it to exterior walls, stucco and siding. And UV exposure plus temperature swings from -30°C to +30°C open joints where different materials meet.

An exterior renovation addresses these failures as a system. Repairing stucco while ignoring the cracked parging below it, or refacing a wall while a failing chimney dumps water behind the finish, leads to repeat damage. One coordinated assessment defines which surfaces need repair, which need replacement and in what order the work should happen.

RENOVATION SERVICES

What an Exterior Renovation Can Include

Each service below links to a dedicated page with common problems, repair methods, materials and completed Calgary projects.

Stone and Masonry Exteriors

Natural and manufactured stone veneer installation, feature walls, columns and entryways, plus repair of existing stone exteriors. Stone remains the most durable exterior finish available for Alberta conditions.

Stucco Repair and Restoration

Crack repair, EIFS restoration, texture matching and full-wall stucco restoration. Martini Stone Masonry has repaired more than 500 Calgary-area homes since 2006 using IMASCO and ADEX systems selected for freeze-thaw flexibility.

Foundation Parging

Parging repair, resurfacing and new parge-coat installation along the exposed foundation, the bottom 12 to 18 inches of the exterior that takes the most snow and moisture contact.

Brick Repair and Tuckpointing

Brick replacement, repointing and tuckpointing for walls, façades and retaining walls, with mortar matched to the existing masonry.

Fireplace and Chimney Masonry

Exterior chimney repair, rebuilds, crowns and custom metal caps. The chimney is the most weather-exposed masonry on the property and often the first element to fail.

HAIL-PROOF EXTERIORS

Hail-Proof Exterior Upgrades for Calgary Properties

Calgary sits inside Alberta's hail corridor, and July to August storms regularly drive golf-ball-sized hail into west- and south-facing walls. A renovation is the right moment to upgrade to hail-proof exterior materials instead of reinstalling the finish that just failed.

Materials That Resist Hail Impact

Stone and brick masonry absorb hail impact that dents metal siding and punctures conventional stucco. For stucco surfaces, graphite-enhanced EIFS finishes such as ADEX Graphex increase impact resistance substantially compared with standard acrylic finishes, the same property that makes them woodpecker-resistant.

Where Hail-Proofing Matters Most

West and south elevations take the majority of wind-driven hail strikes in Calgary. Prioritizing impact-resistant stone, brick or reinforced stucco finishes on those elevations delivers most of the protection at a fraction of a full-envelope cost.

After a Hailstorm

Hail damage to stucco and exterior finishes is frequently claimable under home insurance when documented properly. Martini Stone Masonry photographs and documents damage during the assessment so the report can support an insurance claim, then completes the repair once the claim is approved.

OUR PROCESS

How We Plan an Exterior Renovation

  1. 01

    Full-Exterior Assessment

Every elevation is reviewed: stone, brick, stucco, parging, chimney, caps, flashing interfaces and grade lines. Photographs document the existing condition.

  2. 02

    Prioritized Scope

The assessment separates what must be repaired now (active water entry, unstable masonry) from what can be phased (cosmetic refinishing, elective upgrades).

  3. 03

    Material Selection

Materials are matched to the existing construction, the exposure of each elevation and the intended appearance, including hail-proof options where they add value.

  4. 04

    Coordinated Construction

Work is sequenced so that water-shedding elements (chimney caps, flashing, upper masonry) are corrected before the finishes below them.

  5. 05

    Final Review and Warranty

Completed work is reviewed against the written scope. Warranty terms are defined per project. See masonry warranty information.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Exterior Renovation Questions

Answered by

What counts as an exterior renovation?

Any project that restores or replaces the building envelope's visible surfaces: stone or brick masonry, stucco, parging, chimneys and related caps, crowns and flashing interfaces. Roofing, windows and eavestroughs are separate trades that Martini Stone Masonry coordinates around but does not install.

Can you renovate one elevation or one surface at a time?

Yes. Many Calgary projects are phased: the weather-critical repairs (chimney tops, active cracks, failed parging) are completed first, and cosmetic upgrades follow in later seasons.

Are hail-proof exteriors worth it in Calgary?

For west- and south-facing elevations, usually yes. Calgary's hail frequency means conventional finishes on exposed walls often need repair every few storm seasons, while stone, brick and impact-rated stucco finishes shrug off the same strikes.

Do you work with insurance claims for hail damage?

Martini Stone Masonry documents damage with photographs and a written assessment that homeowners can submit with a claim, then completes repairs once the insurer approves the scope.

When is the best season for exterior renovation work in Calgary?

Cement-based work (stucco, parging, mortar) performs best above 5°C, which makes April through October the primary season. Assessments and planning happen year-round, and spring booking fills three to four weeks ahead.
