Chimney Cap Replacement and Installation in Calgary: Concrete or Metal
The chimney cap and crown are the only things standing between Calgary's weather and the open top of your chimney. When the cap rusts through or the concrete crown cracks, water enters the masonry from above, and every freeze-thaw cycle afterward pries the brick and mortar apart from the inside.
Martini Stone Masonry replaces deteriorated concrete crowns and fabricates custom metal chimney caps for residential and commercial chimneys throughout Calgary, Cochrane, Airdrie, Okotoks, Canmore and Banff. Both options are quoted from the same on-site assessment, so the recommendation follows the chimney's actual construction rather than a standard package.

DEFINITIONS
Cap, Crown or Chase Cap: What Each Part Does
A chimney crown is the sloped concrete or mortar surface that seals the top of a masonry chimney around the flue. A chimney cap is the metal cover above the flue opening that keeps rain, snow and animals out while venting exhaust. A chase cap is the single fabricated metal sheet that covers the full top of a framed or masonry chimney chase, often with one or more flue collars.
Many Calgary chimneys need work on more than one of these at once: a cracked crown usually means the cap flashing has failed too, which is why Martini Stone Masonry assesses and quotes the chimney top as a complete assembly.
WHEN TO REPLACE
Signs Your Chimney Cap or Crown Has Failed
Rust staining down the chimney
A rusted or corroded metal cap sheds oxide streaks onto the masonry below. The cap has already lost its protective coating.
Cracked or crumbling crown
Hairline cracks in a concrete crown admit water; open cracks and spalled edges mean the crown is actively feeding water into the brickwork.
White staining (efflorescence)
Mineral deposits on upper courses show water is moving through the masonry, usually from a failed crown or cap.
Damp firebox or ceiling stains near the chimney
By the time water shows inside, the top of the chimney has typically been open for more than one season.
Missing cap entirely
An open flue takes in rain, snow, birds and debris directly.
CONCRETE OR METAL
Concrete Crown or Custom Metal Cap: Which Is Right for Your Chimney?
Both approaches work when detailed correctly. The right choice depends on the chimney's construction, flue arrangement and how much future maintenance the owner wants to carry.
Concrete Crown Replacement
A new concrete crown is cast in place with proper slope, an overhanging drip edge and a bond break around the flue. Concrete suits traditional masonry chimneys where the original crown design was sound and the owner wants the classic appearance. Poured and finished correctly, a reinforced crown sheds water for decades. The failure point of most original crowns is that they were poured flat, thin and tight to the flue.
Custom Metal Chimney Caps and Chase Caps
A custom-fabricated metal cap covers the entire chimney top in a single piece, eliminating the cracking that concrete is prone to in freeze-thaw climates. Martini Stone Masonry fabricates caps for single-flue, dual-flue and multi-flue chimneys, in galvanized and coloured finishes, including black powder-coated caps matched to roof hardware. Metal is the usual recommendation for chimneys whose concrete crowns have failed repeatedly, and for wide chases where a poured crown would be impractical.
The Practical Rule
If the existing concrete crown failed once from age, replace it in kind. If it has failed more than once, or the chimney is wide, multi-flue or chase-framed, a custom metal system usually outlasts another pour.

OUR PROCESS
How Cap and Crown Replacement Works
- 01
Roof-Level Assessment
The crown, cap, flashing, flue arrangement and upper masonry courses are inspected and photographed.
- 02
Written Recommendation
Concrete or metal, repair or replacement: the recommendation is documented with the reasoning, so the owner can compare options.
- 03
Fabrication or Forming
Metal caps are fabricated to measured dimensions; concrete crowns are formed with slope, overhang and bond breaks.
- 04
Installation and Sealing
The new cap or crown is installed, fastened and sealed, and the surrounding masonry joints are checked and repointed where needed.
- 05
Final Review
The completed top assembly is reviewed and photographed, and project-specific warranty terms are confirmed. See masonry warranty information.

How much does chimney cap replacement cost in Calgary?
Cost depends on the cap type, chimney size, flue count and roof access. A written quote follows the on-site assessment; custom multi-flue metal caps cost more than standard single-flue covers but replace several failure points with one.
Can a metal chimney cap replace a deteriorated concrete crown?
In many cases, yes. A properly designed custom metal system covers the full chimney top with drainage and drip edges, and avoids the freeze-thaw cracking that shortens the life of thin concrete crowns. Suitability depends on the chimney structure and flue arrangement.
How long does a chimney cap installation take?
Most single-chimney cap or crown replacements are completed in one day once the fabricated cap is ready. Combined crown, cap and masonry repairs may take longer and are scheduled from the written scope.
Why did my concrete crown crack?
Most original crowns were poured flat and thin, tight against the flue, without reinforcement or a drip edge. Thermal movement of the flue plus freeze-thaw cycles cracks them, which is why replacements are formed with slope, overhang and a bond break.
Do you repair the brick under a failed cap too?
Yes. Water from a failed cap usually damages the top courses first. Brick replacement, repointing and partial rebuilds are quoted together with the cap work on the Fireplace & Chimney Masonry page.
Which communities do you serve?
Calgary, Cochrane, Airdrie, Okotoks, Canmore, Banff and surrounding Alberta communities, subject to project scope, roof access and scheduling.
