Stucco Cost per Square Foot in Calgary

On the two full applications above the system priced at $14.48 and $18.00 per square foot, with cement board an additional $4.50 per square foot where the substrate needed it. The higher figure included control joints, a Hydroflex waterproofing base and an acrylic finish; the lower was quoted as preparation and application with materials included. Repairs do not price by the square foot: a small area still needs the crew, the materials, the texture match and the clean-up, so the effective rate on a $2,400 deck wall is much higher than $18.

What Drives Stucco Cost

System, not just finish. Most scopes above list the layers: moisture barrier (Blueskin or Hydroflex), mesh, base coat, fiber or levelling coat, primer, finish. Acrylic finish is standard on recent jobs; it flexes with temperature swings and holds colour better than cement finish. EIFS adds rigid foam and a drainage plane and is priced as an insulated wall system.

What comes off first. Patching over sound stucco is the cheap end. Stripping brick from a full face ($14,350) or tearing off siding ($36,800) is where the cost goes.

Framing and sheathing. Water that got behind failed stucco has usually reached the wood. The deck job replaced studs and plywood before any stucco went on.

Height and scaffolding. One-storey garage walls and deck faces are ladder work. Elevations, chimneys and anything above the roofline need scaffolding, which is step one on the $14,350 and $45,000 jobs.

Texture and colour matching. Repairs are matched to the existing texture and, where the finish is acrylic, the colour is mixed in rather than painted on. Matching an aged finish takes trial batches.

Products. Recent jobs used ADEX basecoat and finish, Graphex graphite-enhanced coats, Hydroflex STD waterproofing base and Unitape mesh. Product choice follows the exposure of the wall.

Repair or Re-Stucco?

Patch repairs make sense when cracking is isolated, the stucco is bonded to the wall everywhere else and there is no soft or bulging area. Once stucco is delaminating in sheets, the wood behind is wet, or the wall has been patched repeatedly, stripping the elevation and rebuilding the system is the better spend. On the jobs above, repairs ran $250 to $3,000 and single-elevation replacement was $14,350; the difference is the removal, framing and full assembly.

Hail Damage and Stucco

Cracked or pitted stucco after a hailstorm is common on west and south walls. Small impact damage is patched; a wall with widespread pitting is refinished. Mesh-reinforced acrylic and EIFS systems resist the next storm better than unreinforced cement stucco, which is why the full-system jobs above use them. Hail repairs are often insurance-claimable; a written scope with photos supports the claim. See hail-resistant exterior upgrades for how stucco fits with stone and parging on the same house.

Red Flags in a Stucco Quote

  • No moisture barrier, flashing or mesh in the scope
  • “Patch and paint” over stucco that is soft or hollow-sounding
  • No statement of finish type (cement or acrylic) or product
  • Removal and disposal not mentioned on a replacement job
  • No written warranty

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does stucco repair cost in Calgary?

Small patches from about $250 when added to a larger job; a defined area such as a deck wall or the back wall of a house $2,400 to $3,000; a full elevation stripped and refinished $14,350. All before GST.

How much does stucco cost per square foot in Calgary?

About $14.50 to $18 per square foot on full applications in recent jobs, plus $4.50 per square foot for cement board where needed. Small repairs are priced per job, not per square foot.

How much does it cost to stucco a chimney?

$7,000 to prep, wrap in mesh, apply three coats and an acrylic finish, and fit a metal cover on a brick chimney. Stucco-to-chimney transitions are covered under fireplace and chimney masonry.

How much does it cost to replace siding with stucco?

A full siding tear-off to an insulated EIFS stucco system was $36,800.

Is acrylic stucco worth the extra cost?

On the jobs above acrylic is the standard finish. It stays flexible through freeze-thaw, holds colour without repainting and resists hairline cracking better than cement finish.

Can stucco be repaired in winter?

Base coats and finishes need above-freezing temperatures to cure. Season is one of the reasons small repairs are grouped and scheduled rather than done one crack at a time.
