What Masonry Labour Costs in Calgary
Small time-and-materials jobs are billed at about $55 per mason per hour. A two-person crew for a full day (installing glass block in two windows) came to $880 before GST. Larger projects are quoted as a fixed price rather than by the hour; on a recent heritage brick reconstruction the estimate noted a three-person crew, roughly 85 crew hours and a $90 per hour basis, landing at $11,000 with materials but not the salvaged bricks.
Two things push a job from a few hundred dollars into the thousands: scaffolding and removal. Anything above a single-storey roofline that cannot be reached from ladders needs scaffold set-up and take-down, which shows up as a separate step in nearly every chimney and elevation quote. Removing and disposing of old stone, stucco or brick before new work begins is the other cost driver; a manufactured stone install where the builder supplied the stone and the wall was clean came to $1,800, while replacing the same kind of stone on an existing wall, with removal, ran $4,000.

What Changes the Price of a Masonry Job
Access. Ground-level work is cheapest. Anything on a chimney above the roofline, a second-storey wall or a steep lot needs ladders at minimum and scaffolding for most jobs.
How much comes off first. Removal, cleaning and disposal is a full step of its own. Reusing existing bricks or stones (as in the corner rebuild and the 120-brick community-building job) saves material cost but adds labour for cleaning.
Materials supplied by you. Builders and homeowners who supply their own stone, brick or mantel see lower quotes; the install-only manufactured stone job at $1,800 is the clearest example.
Water management details. Flashing, Blueskin at joints, double black paper, rain screen and wire mesh appear in almost every stone and stucco exterior scope. They are not optional in Calgary’s freeze-thaw climate and they take time to install correctly.
Matching existing work. Colour-matching brick, mortar, stone or stucco texture to what is already on the house is slower than starting fresh.
Season and lead time. Exterior mortar work needs above-freezing temperatures to cure. Spring and fall bookings tend to be easier to schedule than July and August.
Repair or Replace?
Across the jobs on this page, repair generally costs about half of what replacing the same element costs. A crown resurfaced with fiber cement was $1,600 to $2,200 while a concrete-block chimney top rebuilt with a new crown was $3,600. Resetting loose stones on a wall was $2,900 while replacing the stone on a comparable wall was $4,000 to $7,200. Repair makes sense when the underlying structure is sound and the damage is limited to joints, caps or a defined area. Replacement is the better spend when the substrate has failed, when water has been getting behind the surface for years, or when a repair would need to be redone every few seasons.
Warning Signs in a Masonry Quote
A written scope that lists each step (removal, flashing, moisture barrier, mesh, coats, clean-up) is the norm in the quotes above and is what you should expect. Be cautious of a quote that skips flashing or moisture barrier on stone or stucco work, that does not say whether materials are included, that offers a price on a chimney without anyone having been on the roof, or that has no written warranty attached.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum charge for masonry work in Calgary?
Small sealing, caulking or spot-repointing visits in the jobs above ran $600 to $1,100 before GST. Very short time-and-materials work is billed at about $55 per mason-hour.
Do the prices include materials?
Almost always, and the quote says so. Exceptions in our recent work were a builder supplying their own stone ($1,800 install-only), a heritage project supplying salvaged bricks, a whole-house re-clad quoted as labour only, and a fireplace refacing where the mantel was bought by the homeowner but installed by us.
Why is chimney work more expensive than the same repair on a wall?
Roof access, safety set-up and scaffolding. The repair itself may be the same; getting a crew and materials up there safely is what adds cost.
Is masonry work covered by warranty?
Martini Stone Masonry provides a written masonry warranty with terms set out per project. See the warranty page.
Do you charge for estimates?
No. Site assessments and written quotes are free across Calgary and the surrounding communities, whether it is a single parging repair or a full exterior.
