What Sits Behind the Price

The wall assembly, not the finish, is most of the labour. Nearly every stone and stucco scope above lists the same sequence: flashing at the bottom and at penetrations, Blueskin at concrete-to-wood joints, double black paper, wire mesh or rain screen, scratch coat, then the finish. That assembly is what keeps water out through Calgary’s freeze-thaw winters and it is why a $1,800 install-only job and a $4,000 replacement on a similar wall differ by more than the cost of stone.

Removal. Getting old stone, stucco or siding off, cleaning nails and staples from the sheathing and hauling it away is a full step. It is the main difference between new-construction pricing and renovation pricing.

Framing found underneath. When the sheathing or studs behind failed cladding are rotten, they are replaced before anything goes back on. On the Cochrane fieldstone job that was $3,000 of a $14,200 total; on the deck stucco job it was part of a $2,400 scope.

Scaffolding. Any second-storey elevation, gable end or chimney above the roofline needs it. It appears as step one on the whole-house re-clad, the one-elevation stucco job and the above-roofline stucco job.

Material choice. Manufactured stone installs faster than natural stone. Acrylic stucco finish costs more than a cement finish but resists cracking and holds colour. EIFS with graphite-enhanced coats (Graphex) is a full insulated system and priced accordingly.

Who supplies materials. Builders sometimes supply stone; the labour-only re-clad at $30,000 had the homeowner buying all materials. The quote will say.

Hail-Resistant Exterior Upgrades

Calgary sits in Alberta’s hail corridor. The materials that shrug off hail — natural and manufactured stone, and reinforced acrylic or EIFS stucco systems with a mesh-embedded base coat — are the same ones priced above. Converting a stucco half wall to stone was $7,200; a full siding tear-off to a mesh-reinforced EIFS system was $36,800. West- and south-facing elevations take the most damage and are often the only ones worth upgrading. Hail repairs are frequently insurance-claimable; a written scope and photos from the assessment support the claim.

Renovating One Elevation at a Time

Most homeowners do not re-clad a whole house at once. The single-elevation and single-wall figures above ($2,200 to $14,350) are what phased work looks like: one garage front, one gable, the corner that gets the weather, or the brick joints that need repointing. Matching new stone or stucco texture to the existing walls is part of every phased scope.

Red Flags in an Exterior Renovation Quote

  • No flashing, moisture barrier or mesh listed on stone or stucco work
  • Removal and disposal not mentioned on a replacement job
  • A single lump sum with no step-by-step scope
  • No statement of whether stone, stucco system or framing repairs are included
  • No written warranty

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does stone veneer cost per square foot in Calgary?

Recent jobs were quoted per project rather than per square foot. Whole-wall manufactured stone replacement was $4,000; a half-height stucco-to-stone conversion was $7,200; a natural fieldstone re-clad in Cochrane was $11,000 for the stone work alone.

How much does it cost to replace siding with stucco or stone?

A full siding tear-off to an insulated EIFS stucco system was $36,800. Half-height stucco converted to manufactured stone was $7,200 for the affected area.

How much does a retaining wall repair cost?

$4,200 to lift a moving driveway wall, brace it, fill the base and cracked blocks, and reset the stones and caps. Resetting loose stones and repointing on a building wall was $2,900.

Can I do just one wall?

Yes. Most of the jobs above are one elevation, one corner or one wall. Texture and colour are matched to what is already there.

Are hail-proof exteriors worth it in Calgary?

On west and south elevations that keep getting hit, replacing damaged siding or stucco with stone or a mesh-reinforced acrylic system ends the repeat repairs. Insurance may cover part of the cost after a storm.

Do you handle the whole exterior or just masonry?

Masonry, stone, stucco, parging, chimney caps and crowns, and the framing repairs directly under them. Roofing, windows and siding trades are coordinated but not performed by us.
