When Foundation Parging Needs Repair
Cracks in the surface
Fine, stable cracks may be repairable; wide or recurring cracks need assessment before patching, because they can signal movement rather than surface wear.
Loose or hollow areas
A hollow sound under light tapping means the coating has separated from the foundation. It will detach regardless of what is applied over it.
Flaking and surface loss

Preparation Before New Parging
A parge coat performs only as well as the surface under it. Martini Stone Masonry inspects the existing coating for hollow areas and separation, removes unsound material until a stable substrate is reached, cleans and prepares the exposed concrete, then applies repair materials matched to the substrate, thickness and finish requirement. Skipping the removal step, the most common shortcut in cheap quotes, is why so many Calgary parging patches fail within two winters.

Localized Patching or Larger Resurfacing?
Patching is appropriate when damage is limited to a small area, the surrounding coating is firmly bonded, the substrate is stable and a compatible finish can be achieved. Resurfacing becomes the better recommendation when multiple areas sound hollow, previous patches are widespread, flaking spans a larger surface, or spot repairs cannot produce a consistent appearance. The on-site assessment settles the scope before the written estimate.

New parging finishes exposed concrete on new residential foundations, walk-out basement walls, additions and suitable commercial foundations. IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
Parging Is Not a Waterproofing System
Cement-based parging protects and finishes the exposed foundation face, but it does not waterproof the wall. Persistent water entry, wet basement walls, poor grading or foundation movement need separate drainage, grading or structural investigation. What is parging?
Parging is a cement-based coating applied to the exposed above-grade portion of a foundation wall. It protects the concrete from weather exposure and gives the foundation a finished, uniform appearance.
What causes parging to crack or fall off?
Movement, moisture, freeze-thaw exposure, impact damage, weak previous materials, poor surface preparation or loss of bond with the foundation. In Calgary, freeze-thaw is the most common driver: water behind the coating expands when it freezes and pops the parging off the wall.
Can cracked parging be patched?
Localized damage is repairable when the surrounding coating remains firmly bonded and the foundation is stable. Widespread loose or hollow areas need larger resurfacing.
