How to Choose the Right Fireplace for Your Home
Below are the elements to take into consideration when choosing a fireplace:
Space Availability
Examine the size and configuration of the room.
Maintenance Needs
Choose alternatives that fit your lifestyle.
Design Aesthetics
Coordinate the style of the fireplace with your home’s interior.
- Prevents deterioration of the interior chimney from rain, snow, and moisture.
- Deters birds, squirrels, and pests.
- Reduces clogs and blockages for better airflow.

- Visible cracks in the crown
- Water stains inside your chimney or home
- Erosion of mortar or masonry
- Repair cracked or crumbling crowns with durable mortar.
- Full crown replacement using water-resistant materials to prevent future damage.
Crown repairs and replacements are completed using King® MasonMix with waterproof additive — a CSA A179-14 compliant product that bonds reliably in Calgary’s temperature extremes and resists the surface spalling that plain cement crowns develop after 3-5 winters.
Don’t allow a small crack to ruin a big project.

Our experienced masons use old-world methods with updated technology to create a lasting repair.
For chimney repointing and mortar joint repairs, we use King® 2-1-9 Type S mortar (by Sika Canada) — the industry standard for above-grade exterior chimneys in Canada. Type S is specified for Calgary’s climate because it resists water penetration and handles freeze-thaw cycling without cracking. For heritage masonry restoration, we use King® HLM-500, formulated specifically for older chimneys where a softer, lime-based mix is required to match original materials without damaging surrounding brick.
